January 14, 2012

Tyson Stuhr Farm, Poco Dinero- Gila Bend

Construct Artificial Burrows For Burrowing Owls (continuation of construction beginning Oct. 15, 2011).

This location is about 1.5 - 2 hours driving time from Phoenix, the shorter time if you live in the West Valley, 2 hr if you live in the East Valley.

This site is large with many burrows to install and we really need your help. The first burrows were installed on October 15th and many more were added on November 19th. Because the burrows are being installed next to a farm, it is ideal Burrowing Owl habitat. The owls will be relocated to these burrows in the Spring of 2012 and we need to finish the site before then. This project is for volunteers 10 years of age or older. The work involves assembly of burrow materials into the artificial burrows and some shoveling of sandy soil back into the trench to cover materials. The heavy digging has already been done by backhoe.

This event is expected to finish the burrows at the "Poco Dinero" part of the farm. The next event will move the work to another part of the farm located near Oatman, about 5 miles South of Poco Dinero.

If you are interested in coming to this event please contact Wild At Heart at 480-595-5047.

Build Release Tent for Burrowing Owl Relocation Zanjero Park, Gilbert

At this event we will build 1 release tent in conjunction with Desert Rivers Audubon for holding Burrowing Owls. Release of the owls into the tent is dependent on security fence completion after the tent is constructed. Ideally, this is completed before 3pm so owls can be released into the tent.

Typically the first owl release occurs in the last week of February and then continues through March. Usually 2-3 release tents are constructed per event day and owls are placed inside each tent to build site fidelity. We will need volunteers to help with the release tent construction in the Gila Bend area and possibly other areas of the state where artificial burrows are located.
